Tony Braunagel is een Amerikaanse drummer, producer en songwriter uit Houston, Texas, Verenigde Staten, die woont en werkt in Los Angeles, Californië. Braunagel heeft als muzikant, componist en producer meegespeeld op talloze film- en televisiesoundtracks en albums. Hij is vooral bekend als sessiedrummer en/of percussionist op meer dan 200 albums, waaronder die van Otis Rush, Eric Burdon, Johnny Nash, Coco Montoya en Lucky Peterson, evenals Grammy-winnende albums van Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal en Buddy Guy (percussie). Hij heeft ook live opgetreden met tientallen muzikale iconen, zoals Bonnie Raitt, Rickie Lee Jones, BB King, Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, Bette Midler, Lyle Lovett en Taj Mahal.
De opname- en uitvoeringscarrière van Braunagel omvat talloze en uiteenlopende ritmes en drumstijlen, maar hij is vooral bekend om rhythm and blues, blues, Americana rock-‘n-roll, blues shuffle, backbeat, en zijn eigen mix van reggae en West-Afrikaanse ritmes.
Verschillende albums die door Braunagel zijn geproduceerd, zijn genomineerd voor en hebben Grammy’s en Blues Music Awards gewonnen. Ze bereikten de Billboard-hitlijsten, de Living Blues-hitlijsten, Roots & Music Reports en vele bluesbloglijsten wereldwijd, waaronder albums van artiesten als Taj Mahal, Eric Burdon, Coco Montoya, Danielle Nicole, Phantom Blues Band en Curtis Salgado.
In het begin van zijn carrière als drummer speelde Braunagel in verschillende lokale bands, zoals Soul Brothers Incorporated, The Jokers en Buttermilk Bottom. Laatstgenoemde band kreeg een platencontract bij Polydor en bracht een single uit. Na het uiteenvallen van Buttermilk Bottom vormde hij samen met Andy Chapman (zang), Jimmy Don Smith (gitaar) en later David Kealey (gitaar), Michael Montgomery (keyboards) en Terry Wilson (bas) de Bloontz All Star Blues Band. In 1971 verhuisde de band onder leiding van producer Ron Johnsen naar New York, waar ze hun naam verkortten tot Bloontz en een contract tekenden bij het Evolution-label.
Bloontz nam één album op in de Electric Lady Studios, waarna Braunagel en Wilson in 1973 met Johnny Nash op tournee gingen en deel uitmaakten van zijn nieuwste Sons of the Jungle-formatie.
Braunagel schreef in 1974 een nummer voor Johnny Nash’ album Celebrate Life, getiteld “Standing in the Rain”. Kort daarna accepteerde Braunagel, samen met bassist Wilson, een aanbod van Island Records om naar Londen te verhuizen en daar samen te werken met John “Rabbit” Bundrick en verschillende andere artiesten van Island. Tijdens zijn verblijf in Londen was hij de huisdrummer van de Texas Rhythm Section bij Island Records, samen met Wilson op bas.
In Londen ontmoette hij Paul Kossoff, de voormalige gitarist van Free, en samen met Wilson en Montgomery van zijn vorige band, Bloontz, vormden ze Back Street Crawler. De band bestond verder uit Terry Wilson-Slesser als zanger en later John “Rabbit” Bundrick, die Montgomery op keyboards verving na de release van het debuutalbum The Band Plays On (Atco Records). Ze namen nog een album op, 2nd Street, voordat Kossoff in 1976 overleed. Na zijn dood besloot de band bij elkaar te blijven. Ze voegden Geoff Whitehorn toe als gitarist en verkortten de naam tot Crawler. Deze incarnatie van de band stapte over naar Epic Records, nam nog twee albums op en maakte verschillende tournees door Amerika, waarbij ze soms het voorprogramma verzorgden voor grote bands als Kansas, Foreigner, Rush en Robin Trower.
In 1979 verhuisde Braunagel naar Los Angeles, waar hij werk vond als tourmuzikant en opnameartiest met artiesten als Eric Burdon, Rickie Lee Jones en Bette Midler. In 1984 nam Braunagel plaats achter het drumstel in de band van Bonnie Raitt en speelde mee op de albums Nick of Time en Luck of the Draw, en toerde met haar tot begin jaren negentig. Hij toerde ook een aantal jaren met Taj Mahal en The Phantom Blues Band.
Braunagels carrière als live-performer omvatte samenwerkingen met artiesten als Ivan Neville, Etta James, Eric Burdon, Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Jimmie Reed, Rickie Lee Jones, Bette Midler, Buddy Guy, Coco Montoya, Curtis Salgado, Lyle Lovett, Taj Mahal, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Jack Mack and the Heart Attack, Crawler, Back Street Crawler, Clover, Paul Kossoff, Andy Fraser, Tommy Dardar, Katey Sagal, Charles Brown, Koko Taylor, Billy Vera (Billy and the Beaters), John Cleary, Mike Zito, Billy Thompson, Phantom Blues Band, Leo Nocentelli en GeorBraunagel speelde samen met onder anderen George Porter Jr., Roy Gaines, Chris Cain en BW Stephenson. Hij trad ook op met de huisbands van de Blues Foundation en House of Blues, met gasten als Dr. John, Little Milton, Rufus Thomas, Otis Clay en Carla Thomas.
Naast drummen en muziek produceren, is Braunagel ook songwriter. Hij is winnaar van een Blues Music Award. Hij werd twaalf keer genomineerd in de categorie ‘Beste Instrumentalist – Drums’ en won de prijs in 2018. Braunagels opnames omvatten filmmuziek en televisieseries, evenals talloze albums als muzikant, songwriter en producer. Halverwege de jaren 90 produceerde Braunagel ook verschillende reclamejingles. In 2017 is Braunagel te horen op Gods and Ghosts van MEG Records/Nashville-artiest Tom Maclear.

Gedurende de jaren 90 speelde Braunagel mee op vele bekroonde albums. Braunagel heeft ook meer dan 20 artiesten geproduceerd in verband met meer dan 40 albums. Hij speelde drums op twee Grammy Award-winnende albums van Taj Mahal en The Phantom Blues Band – Señor Blues en Shoutin’ in Key (Grammy-winnaar, BMA-winnaar)[26], waarvan Braunagel de laatste produceerde. Zijn opnames met Taj Mahal en The Phantom Blues Band wonnen in 2001 ook de W.C. Handy Award voor Band van het Jaar.[29] Braunagel speelde ook mee op Buddy Guy’s Feels Like Rain (Grammy, Beste Hedendaagse Bluesalbum, 1994), Bonnie Raitt’s Nick of Time (Grammy, Album van het Jaar, 1989), Bonnie Raitt’s Luck of the Draw (Grammy, Album van het Jaar, 1991) en op Trampled Under Foot’s Badlands (BMA Hedendaags Bluesalbum van het Jaar, 2014), dat hij ook produceerde.
Daarnaast produceerde en speelde Braunagel mee op Hard Truth en Coming in Hot met Coco Montoya; My Secret Life, ‘Til Your River Runs Dry, Soul of a Man met Eric Burdon; Karen Lovely’s album Ten Miles of Bad Road uit 2015 (BMA-nominatie, winnaar van de Blues411 “Jimi” Award) en Cry No More (Grammy-nominatie) met Danielle Nicole. In 2019 produceerde Braunagel Nick Schnebelens album Crazy All By Myself. Hij was ook co-producent en speelde mee op de albums Clean Getaway (BMA-nominatie), Soul Shot (BMA-winnaar) en The Beautiful Lowdown (BMA-winnaar) van Curtis Salgado.

Van 2001 tot 2009 had Braunagel een terugkerende rol als acteur en drummer in de ABC-sitcom According to Jim, met Jim Belushi in de hoofdrol, en verscheen hij in ongeveer 40 afleveringen.
Braunagel woont in de omgeving van Los Angeles, waar hij optreedt en muziekopnames produceert. In maart 2020 werkte hij aan opnameprojecten met Phil Colombato, T Bear, Deb Ryder, Diunna Greenleaf en Chris Dowd. Braunagel treedt regelmatig op in de regio Los Angeles met artiesten als Paulie Cerra, Billy Vera (Billy and the Beaters) en de Bonedaddys.
