Hub Rasker (August 1, 1965), born in Gennep (North Limburg), started drumming late in life.
The trigger was his invention, the Rhythmtandem, in 2008.
He lacked the drumming skills to demonstrate the new instrument, which combines drums and bass in a unique way, and for that reason, Rasker took drum lessons for a year. The patented instrument was received with great amazement at the Frankfurter Musik Messe, but it did not lead to commercial success.
While Rasker appeared in various bands as a singer, bassist, and songwriter in his early years as a musician, the drumming bug had definitely taken hold of him, and around 2010, he took his place on the drum stool with the Arnhem-based Celtic folk group Stac Polly.
A few years later, Rasker became intensely interested in recording techniques and built his first studio in the attic of his home’s garage. It was for his band Maggie’s Flock, the successor to Stac Polly, that he put his first album production to his name. The already planned album presentation tour for the brand-new album Party at the Cemetery never happened. Covid threw a spanner in the works at the time. Maggie’s Flock can be found regularly in pubs and at festivals. The band releases singles with some regularity, recorded and produced at Rasker’s Hen Hut Sound Studio.
In 2022, other opportunities came along. While recording a Dutch-language reggae song for an Arnhem songwriter at Rasker’s studio, the idea was born to start a new band. Rasker played the drums, bass, and various guitar and keyboard parts, and Westervoort singer Sebastiaan Kleijne was recruited for the vocals. Even before the band Groot Onderhoud became a reality, the trio released the album Langspeelplaat. Groot Onderhoud has since become a colorful and welcome guest at various locations in the Gelderland region. Rasker’s drumming is functional. He prefers to play in service of the song and in service of the band. Live, you can see him behind his Pearl Masters Custom Maple drum kits. A black set for Maggie’s Flock and a plain wooden set for Groot Onderhoud. For Maggie’s Flock, the Pearl Steve Ferrone signature snare drum is his favorite, while for Groot Onderhoud he opts for the high-tuned LP 13” salsa snare drum.
